Jabariya Jodi Story:

Jabariya Jodi revolves around a life of a local young goon, Abhay Singh, in Bihar whose idea of “Samaj Seva” was to stop dowry in his own unique way. He would abduct the grooms getting married in his area and force them to marry the girl without having to pay for any dowry. His father is a local politician who effectively holds the strings in his son’s life.

While Abhay would do this for free, his father would take a hefty fee from the bride for the service. He also controlled Abhay in a way oblivious to him, thus weakening their dynamic. Abhay hopes are become the MLA in the future to come and battle the evil of Dowry in his own way. The future for him holds no place for love and believes that marriage is a trap for all those men who are convinced that it is going to provide them with “happiness”.

This is until he is reunited with his childhood best friend who moved back into town. Babli Yadav is a free-spirited, bold, “bindass” girl who eventually wants to get married to someone. She doesn’t really care for consent and is ready to conform to the social norm that all girls must get married. When Babli is back in Abhay’s life, he is confused between his current job as a “dowry abductee” and the routine life of marriage to Babli.

Babli gains the reputation of ‘Babli Bomb’ after she beats up her boyfriend when she is stood up at her marriage. Like any romantic comedy, this one too has a secret admirer who never gets the chance to be with his love. In this case, it was Balbir, who never got Babli’s love requited, while she pined after Abhay. Abhay though confused throughout the movie eventually chose the path of marriage and the two eventually get married.

Jabariya Jodi Review:

Jabariya Jodi aims at educating people about the horrible practice of dowry still prevalent in the rural parts of India, but the way it has been scripted is nothing short of ludicrous. Making Siddharth Malhotra the hero makes people think that the way he goes about eliminating the evil is ethical. It fails to hit the point in many ways.

While there are specks of comedy scattered throughout the film, I wouldn’t call it a “comedy” per say, plainly because it just wasn’t entertaining enough and seemed to be dragged on.

The casting was highly inappropriate for the roles, as neither Siddharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra look the part of local goon and rural girl. The accents, however, hit home and were spot and Parineeti Chopra fans will be delighted to know that their fave has once again struck with a phenomenal performance, despite the dry plot.

The movie is as predictable as it gets and seems to be too long. The typical love triangle of a girl falling for a bad boy and a nice boy loving the girl is too overplayed and definitely doesn’t impress me.

While Parineeti’s acting was great, her character was a contraindication to everything she portrayed. A strong woman craving to conform to the norms of marriage? The sad portrayal of feminism if you ask me.

All in all the movie was a strict one time watch, which should have been shorter than it was.

Jabariya Jodi  Budget:

The budget for the movie was set at a strict 22 crores, for production and marketing as well.
