Laal Kaptaan Review:
Laal Kaptaan is based on India in the late 1700s. The film starts with the battle of Buxar. The era of the film is when there was complete confusion in India. The Mughals were losing their position, the Britishers were extending their power and there were complete disputes between the various kings throughout the country. The concept and the background is really well chosen but perhaps the director, the scriptwriters and the makers of the film could not make full use of the benefit. There was a lot they could have done but they failed.
About the story of the film, Laal Kaptaan seems interesting in the beginning. It almost succeeds in engaging the audience. But then, the suspense stretches out so long that the audience starts loosing interesting. It’s like you see the main lead doing many things but you don’t know the reason why he is doing all of that. In the end, the movie starts to appear stretched and irritating and the viewers give up their patience and stop trying to understand.
Coming to the acting in the film, Saif Ali Khan is the lead role in Laal Kaptaan. He is undoubtedly one of the most talented actors in Bollywood. He has been known for his experiments with roles and is a versatile actor who knows his work. Saif is excellent in the movie. He successfully depicts the role of the Naga Sadhu. He is able to engage the viewers even though he looks unrecognizable in the look of the sadhu.
With him, Deepak Dobriyal is also excellent. He is in the role of a man with a talent for detecting the smell. Deepak does his work too well and proves that he is talented enough and should get big projects in the future. Both Deepak and Saif have done their work well and their hard work shows. But unfortunately, they have worked with the wrong movie and wrong script. The other actors are just okay. The man who plays the role of Manav Vij could have done quite better.
Zoya Hussain, who plays the role of a merciless widow, at first appears good but with time, she gets somewhere lost in the script.
The look of the various actors in the movie looks quite inspired by various other movies. Saif Ali Khan looks more or less like the Jacksparrow in Pirates of Carribean. His dusted look with ash on his face, dishevelled hair, dust on his body, kohl covered eyes, wearing a red jacket, Saif’s look appears too much like him. He, in fact, seems like an Indian version of Jacksparrow. Also, Sonakshi Sinha who appears only for a small moment in the film and then disappears seems to have her look inspired by Joker. The difference is that she has the scar only on one side of her face and joker had on both sides. Even the witch who makes the prediction about the baby looks inspired by other movies.
The cinematography of the film is appreciable. The movie shows some really great action scenes and interesting backgrounds. However, when the film is on the era of the 1800s, there was so much that could have been focussed on and the result would have been something too different. The cinematographers failed to lay emphasis on many things. But overall, the cinematography looks good, if not excellent. Action sequences shot in the dark use the fluorescent light and they look very good.
One good thing about the film, other than the acting of Saif Ali Khan and Deepak Dobriyal, is the action scene in the film. The movie shows some really interesting action. However, some of the violent scenes are stomach-churning. There is lot of bloodshed in the film.
Overall, Laal Kaptaan is 155 minutes long and it really appears too stretched and boring. The script of the movie is not capable enough to keep the audience again. This movie is only for Saif Ali Khan fans. If you are not a Saif fan, you will most probably feel that your money got wasted after the film.
