"Katal-e- aam Hindu kabhi nahi karta kyuki humare sanskriti mai kahi bhi iss prakar ke baat hai hi nahi. Om Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah Sarve Santu Nir-Aamayaah Sarve Bhadraanni Pashyantu Maa Kashcid-Duhkha-Bhaag-Bhavet || Om Shaantih Shaantih Shaantih || "

These are the words of Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur when she was talking to the moderator on the Republic TV in response to the RSS being alleged as the Hindu terror group by the Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh member, Prakash Ambedkar. What she basically said was "I haven't committed any murder, a Hindu can never take such step as it's not in our culture. Om! May all become happy. May all be free from illness. May all see what is auspicious, may no one suffer. "

All this sounds fine and nice to the ears, provided you don't know who this is coming from. This isn't some random person. These are the words of a bomb blast accused. Pragya Thakur was accused of the Malegaon terrorist bombing in 2008 after the bike used in the blast was found to have been registered in her name.

So before we go any further, let’s establish some known information here, which are available in the public domain about the person we will be talking about, so we can understand things from a perspective.

The person who alleged the RSS as being a terrorist organization is the grandson of BR Ambedkar. Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur happens to have been born in the BHIND district of Madhya Pradesh, in a family that had had a long association with the Sangh Parivar.

Her father, Chandarpal Singh Thakur allegedly had close ties with the RSS and was actively involved with them. Thakur herself worked with the student wing of the RSS, Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) as well as Durga Vahini which is women’s wing of the VISHWA HINDU PARISHAD.

Now before we dwell deeper into the matter, there are a few facts that needed to be pointed out here, with reference to the scenario.

  1. BJP always promoted itself as a very clean party devoid of involving people with criminal charges or history of having had criminal charges.
  2. Before contesting the elections in 2014, Narendra Modi, our current prime minister himself said in one of his political campaigns that he will introduce fast trail courts for the people who are actively involved in politics but have a criminal record against their names.
  3. He said that the party is strict against criminals and will never tolerate people who have had a criminal history or background and those who already do, will be put behind bars with the help of the fast trial courts as soon as possible. (which he was supposed to make)

Shadhvi Pragya Thakur

One thing is clear after listening to this, the public can be assured that the party, led by Narendra Modi will have zero tolerance against criminals.

Keep this in mind, as this will be used to put things into context as you read further.

Now, coming back to Sadhvi Thakur, she has a post-graduate degree in history.

On 29 Sept 2008, six people were killed in a bombing near a mosque in Malegaon in Maharashtra. In the bombing, reportedly, more than a hundred people were severely injured. When the same was taken into the court, the prosecution believed it was the handiwork of a Hindu extremist group. Hemant Karkare was appointed to look into the matter and he discovered that the blast was carried out by keeping the explosives in a bike. The bike that was used in the blast, was traced back in Surat and then to Sadhvi Thakur, and hence she was called in on this and was alleged that she had connections with what had happened in Malegaon. This turned out to be the first key evidence material on this case.

On further investigation, three other names were discovered and were brought into the light, RSS activist Sunil Joshi, Ramchandra Kalsangara, and Sandeep Dange. She was hence arrested in 2008 for the same and was put behind bars. The NIA was given this case in 2011, which happens to be the central agency to fight terror in India. The trial went on, until in 2015 when she was given clean chit by the NIA (national investing agency), but the trial refused to discharge her completely off the case. since the court had no evidence to support the claims made on Sadhvi, other than the motorcycle that was used, they had no choice but to let her out on bail. Now an important point to note here is that in 2011, after the 26/11 attacks in India, Hemant Karkare was killed and the case was off his hands. His research however still holds good and is available with the NIA.

In 2016, a new charge sheet was filed by the NIA. This charge sheet was completely opposite of what was discovered in the research by Hemant and gave an entirely new direction to the case. This charge sheet failed to gather any elemental evidence against Pragya Thakur and said she was innocent.

The bike was said to have been owned by a man named Kalsangara for last two years and was in his possession. Now, the special prosecutor then, of the NIA, Rohini, said that before the charge sheet was filed, she was pressurized politically to slow down this prosecution. All of this had been covered by the Indian Express in the local daily. Comes 2017, NIA’s special court said that all the MCOCA (Maharashtra control of organized crime act) charges against Thakur hold no ground and hence need to be dropped immediately, but we aren’t fully convinced, and hence the trial will still run under UAPA (unlawful activities prevention act), section 16 and section 18.

Now this means that Thakur is still accused of the blast and isn’t fully proven innocent.

Now, we have been used to seeing criminals and other accused getting tickets in an election in India since a Long time now. we are used to the political hypocrisy in our country. But this is for the first time that a terror accused has gotten a ticket to contest elections. Sadhvi Singh will be contesting elections against Digvijay Singh in Bhopal from BJP. Yes, a lot of people are using her bail as an argument to support her and the word is out that she has been free and all charges against her are dropped. And that she has all rights to contest elections.

In an interview she gave to a very famous news channel recently, she said that she was tortured by Maharashtra anti-terrorism squad, and humiliated inside the cell. She said that chemicals were injected forcefully into her body because of which she suffered from cancer, and that she was beaten with leather belts during nights, made to starve for 24 days without any food and was given electric shocks and was made to listen to objectionable pornographic content and being a female, this kind of treatment violates all kinds of norms and is a human rights violation.

Now, these are only claims and aren’t verified yet. The department has said that these are false allegations and none of this had happened to her while she was in jail.

All of this went over the head when she is a rally recently said that Hemant Karkare died because he alleged her false-fully of the blast and so she cursed him which caused his death. These are the times when we as public fail to understand why politicians love to take up the jobs of stand up comedians in India.  Thakur then in another interview also went a level ahead and expressed her dissatisfaction about causing fewer casualties in the blast. This puts the claims made by the NIA to question. Thakur also said that this was all a Congress conspiracy. Huffington post further quoted Thakur saying “ I call Digvijay Singh ‘Dikbhramit’ because his direction is never right. He conspired against me over personal vendetta”

Thakur still being accused of the blast is contesting from Bhopal, and it's she is contesting for a party that said that they have zero tolerance against criminals, let alone the terror accused. but we have come to expect this from BJP now. now that we know that BJP is the part with the maximum number of member of parliament with a criminal background, or charges against them, in the history of this democracy, we can't do much but see how low the political party can hit, on the grounds of showing its double standards. this is also not the first time that something like this has happened, the CM of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath has also had a number of criminal charges against his name and some serious criminal charges like filing up riots, and yet the first thing he did after becoming the CM of UP, was to have all of the cases against him dropped. he had a history with giving hate speeches in his rally but that doesn't seem to have changed, considering it was only recently that he started the BAJRANGBALI caste joke, and the made statements where he said for every Hindu that dies, a hundred Muslims will have their heads off their body.

It is often said that "politics of a state is the reflection of its society" looked through a mirror. If this is the mirror we are showing something is definitely wrong, and if we aren’t, and this is what is being given to us, the system needs a revamp. The voters need the most of their intelligence at this hour that our country is going in a direction like this. A lot of introspection is required, and if not done, we will be sitting on our sofas for the next 5 years, saying that the political parties are corrupt and that nothing will change in the nation. There’s a saying be the change you want to see in the world, perhaps it was meant for a time like this. Our country needs us more than it ever has, at the moment. Yes, a change is required, but the change is coming only if we take this on our shoulder, no one is bringing it for us for sure. And parties saying that they will fight terror by including terrorist in the party is the same as saying we will fight the rapes in our country by encouraging rapists and awarding them for commits more and more rapes.

It’s time you decide what kind of a country you want to live in and let that thought reflect in your vote.
